Centro Arte para la Paz -Suchitoto –

History behind balconies

2011 – 2012

Second exhibition:

Historically, Suchitoto was made up of four neighborhoods: Santa Lucia or Barrio de Los Indios, Condega, Campo Santo and Tabanco. By 1852 these increased to five, El Tabanco, Los Indios, La Bolsa, Condega and Barrio Nuevo or La Cruz. Over the years, the number of barrios increased to six. The names were changed to Christian names related to some saint.

Today, the number of neighborhoods has remained at six: Barrio el Centro, Barrio San José, Barrio El Calvario, Barrio Santa Lucia, Barrio La Cruz and Barrio Concepción.

Each of them is identified with a symbol and a representative color. These identifications have been created recently and are linked to certain characteristics of their own. In fact, it was in 1953 when the famous Salvadoran filmmaker, Alejandro Cotto, assigned a symbol to each neighborhood:

Barrio La Cruz: it is identified by the symbol of "The key", for being the first to enter the city of Suchitoto. The color that identifies it: yellow.

Barrio Concepción: its symbol is "The food basket" in reference to the fertility of its land on the shore of Lake Suchitlán, which allows the production of vegetables. The color that identifies it: green

Barrio El Calvario: "The Cross", in reference to the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, color purple.

Barrio Santa Lucia"The Rose", flower linked to the Blessed Saint Lucia, color pink.

Barrio El Centro: "The Wheel", symbolizing progress coming from commerce, one of its most characteristic features
